Butterfly Wing Scales No. 33 forms part of Chelsea Hopkins-Allan’s Butterfly Wing Scales series, inspired by the minute overlapping scales that create the extraordinary colour and surface structures of butterfly and moth wings.
The composition is built from hundreds of repeated elongated marks arranged into shifting fields, clusters and currents. Rather than forming a rigid geometric pattern, the individual marks vary subtly in direction, spacing and colour, giving the work an organic, almost woven quality.
This particular work is distinguished by an exceptionally lively palette. Bright emerald and lime greens move through areas of turquoise and aqua, while coral, orange, yellow and vivid pink and magenta create concentrated passages of warmth. Darker blue-grey and neutral marks provide intermittent contrast throughout the composition.
Viewed from a distance, the individual marks merge into broader bands and patches of colour. At closer range, the repeated structure becomes increasingly apparent, revealing the fine rhythm and variation within the composition.
The Butterfly Wing Scales series draws upon the microscopic structure and colour variation found in butterfly and moth wings, translating these natural forms into intricate abstract compositions.
