Butterfly Wing Scales No. 36 forms part of Chelsea Hopkins-Allan’s Butterfly Wing Scales series, inspired by the minute overlapping scales that create the extraordinary colour, texture and structure of butterfly and moth wings.

Across this large-format composition, thousands of repeated elongated marks form an expansive field of shifting colour. Rather than following a rigid geometric arrangement, the marks vary subtly in spacing, direction and intensity, producing an organic surface that changes character as the viewer moves closer to or further away from the work.

This particular composition is dominated by luminous yellow-green, lime and emerald tones. These are interwoven with passages of turquoise and cobalt blue, together with coral, orange, pink, burgundy and darker neutral accents. The result is a densely layered chromatic field in which smaller areas of contrasting colour continually emerge from the broader green structure.

At close range, the individual repeated marks and subtle variations between them become apparent. From a distance, they merge into larger bands, currents and patches of colour, giving the work a strong sense of rhythm, movement and visual texture.

The Butterfly Wing Scales series draws upon the microscopic structure and colour variation found in butterfly and moth wings, translating these near-invisible natural forms into intricate abstract compositions at a dramatically enlarged scale.

This archival giclée fine-art limited edition preserves the repeated mark-making and complex colour relationships of Chelsea Hopkins-Allan’s original artwork. At 107 × 157 cm framed, it has substantial physical presence and is particularly suited to larger residential, commercial, hospitality or workplace interiors.

This framed limited-edition product has been discontinued and no further framed examples in this format are being produced. This is one of the final remaining examples from the Enigmatic Drawings Art Display Stock collection.

The reduced price reflects its Art Display Stock status. The framed work remains in good overall condition, with a few minor cosmetic marks from previous display use.

This artwork forms part of the Enigmatic Drawings Art Display Stock Sale collection.

Photography note: The photograph shows the actual artwork and frame. The frame and mat are white. The photograph was taken under warm ambient lighting and through the glazing, which has introduced a noticeable warm/yellow cast, reflections and glare, particularly across the upper portion of the work. Camera white balance and image processing can also affect the apparent balance of the greens, yellows, blues and other colours. The physical artwork, white frame and white mat are clearer and more naturally balanced when viewed directly.
