Butterfly Wing Scales No. 51 forms part of Chelsea Hopkins-Allan’s Butterfly Wing Scales series, inspired by the minute overlapping scales that create the extraordinary colour, texture and structure of butterfly and moth wings.
Across the composition, thousands of repeated elongated marks form a densely layered field of colour and movement. The individual marks vary subtly in spacing, direction and intensity, creating an organic surface that changes character as the viewer moves closer to or further away from the work.
At close range, the repeated marks and fine variations between them become increasingly apparent. From a distance, they merge into broader bands, clusters and currents, giving the work a strong sense of rhythm, depth and visual texture.
The Butterfly Wing Scales series draws upon the microscopic structure and colour variation found in butterfly and moth wings, translating these near-invisible natural forms into intricate abstract compositions at an enlarged scale.
This limited-edition giclée print was produced using archival pigment inks on 310 gsm Hahnemühle German Etching paper. The 100% cotton archival fine-art paper has a substantial weight and pronounced tactile surface, giving the reproduction a character particularly well suited to Chelsea Hopkins-Allan’s original watercolour-based mark-making.
Each print in the total edition of 100 is individually checked, hand-signed, titled and numbered by Chelsea Hopkins-Allan in pencil on the lower front edge of the print.
The float-mounted presentation gives the work additional physical separation from the white backing and creates subtle shadow and depth within the white box frame, allowing the artwork to appear visually suspended within the frame.
This framed limited-edition product has been discontinued and no further framed examples in this format are being produced. This is one of the final remaining examples from the Enigmatic Drawings Art Display Stock collection.
This artwork forms part of the Enigmatic Drawings Art Display Stock Sale collection.
Photography note: The artwork reference image shows the composition clearly without the reflections present in the framed installation photographs. The installation photographs show the actual framed display-stock example. The frame and backing are white. Ambient lighting, reflections through the glazing, camera white balance and image processing can affect the apparent colour balance and clarity of the artwork in photographs. The physical framed artwork is clearer and more naturally balanced when viewed directly.
