Butterfly Wing Scales No. 34 is a richly coloured composition inspired by the minute overlapping scales found on butterfly and moth wings. Hundreds of repeated, hand-rendered marks form an irregular woven field of colour, combining the biological structure of wing scales with the visual rhythm of crochet, textile and cellular patterning.
The upper and surrounding field is dominated by luminous shades of coral, salmon, rose pink, magenta, orange and red, interspersed with smaller passages of yellow, turquoise, green, blue and white. Within the lower half, a large circular formation introduces deeper tones of charcoal, black, olive, forest green, navy and electric blue, surrounding a softly contrasting centre of pale peach, cream and warm pink.
The interaction between the vivid warm background and the darker circular form creates strong visual depth and gives the work the character of both an enlarged biological specimen and a contemporary abstract composition.
The print is presented in a custom handmade black timber frame, constructed using conservation-grade mounting and backing materials and protected by archival-quality acrylic glazing. A broad white mat is raised approximately 5 mm above the print, creating a refined recessed presentation and subtle dimensional separation.
This design has now been discontinued, and this is the final framed example available. No further reproductions will be produced or offered. It is included in the Enigmatic Drawings Display Stock Sale, reduced from AUD $1,200 to AUD $800.
Please note: The photographs show the actual framed display-stock artwork. Reflections from the acrylic glazing, ambient lighting, camera angle and in-situ photography may affect the apparent colour, contrast and clarity. The separate artwork image provides a more accurate indication of the composition and palette, although the physical print remains more vibrant and finely detailed when viewed directly.
