Butterfly Wing Scales is a large-scale original watercolour by Chelsea Hopkins-Allan inspired by the extraordinary microscopic structures that create the colour and pattern of butterfly and moth wings.
Under magnification, butterfly wings are covered by millions of minute overlapping scales. Chelsea transforms those near-invisible structures into an expansive field of thousands of individually painted oval and teardrop-like marks.
The palette is exceptionally varied. Transparent and layered passages of yellow, ochre, orange, coral, crimson, rose, mauve and lilac move through cooler areas of turquoise, aqua, cobalt blue, navy, emerald, olive and lime green. Pale washes, soft greys and areas of white provide breathing space between the stronger colours.
At close range, the individual watercolour marks and variations in pigment become increasingly visible. Viewed from further away, those marks merge into larger fields of colour, rhythm and movement. The work therefore shifts between detailed biological observation and large-scale abstraction according to viewing distance.
The painted paper has been carefully cut around its outer edge and float-mounted approximately 5 mm above a white backing board. The separation creates a delicate shadow underneath the artwork and gives it a specimen-like quality, as though an enormously magnified section of biological material has been suspended within the frame.
Because the composition is non-figurative, it can be displayed successfully in either portrait or landscape orientation.
This listing is for the unique original artwork.
