THE PHYSICAL EXPERIENCE

Beyond the Screen

A screen can reproduce the image. It cannot reproduce the physical relationship between the viewer, the drawing and its scale.

At physical scale, particularly in the larger works, the relationship changes. Fine marks that dominate a computer screen begin to recede. Larger geometries, circles, axes, alignments, figures and repeating fields can suddenly become the primary experience.

Step closer and that larger structure begins to break apart again. What appeared from several metres away as a single geometric field resolves into thousands of individual marks — script, symbols, networks, lines, smaller systems and tightly constructed relationships.

In the larger works, human forms can approach bodily scale and the drawings can occupy a significant part of the viewer's field of vision. When several are present in the same room, the encounter can become environmental rather than simply pictorial.

Over the years, many viewers have described that encounter as palpable, immersive or unusually absorbing. Some describe a sense that the patterns intensify, move or pulse as attention settles on them.

George Allan has experienced the same shift in his own work. Much of the time the drawings may simply occupy the room. But in quieter or more introspective moments, the larger structures can suddenly become dominant — drawing the eye inward in an experience that can feel almost vortex-like.

That response is not automatic, and it is not presented here as a measurable property of the work. Distance, lighting, scale, attention and the state of the viewer all affect perception. What matters is that the physical encounter offers conditions a screen cannot duplicate.

The screen is an introduction. Physical scale is another encounter entirely.
THE WORK

Move Inside the Drawings

Begin with the complete works, then move progressively into enlarged detail, moving image, drawing processes and visual studies.

01
FIRST SERIES · GENESIS

Genesis #14

Planetary structure, human polarity and a wider celestial field brought together within a single composition.

The Northern and Southern Hemispheres of Earth, male and female human forms, radial line systems and surrounding celestial and vortical structures form an integrated planetary field.

DRAWING DATE · 03 DECEMBER 2001 – 29 JANUARY 2002
02
SECOND SERIES · 2007–2012

Matrix

Human embodiment, polarity, coding and architecture held inside one immense system.

A central helical column, male and female figures, script-bearing fields, chambers, grids and planetary structures combine within a densely interconnected architectural field.

THIRD SERIES · APRIL–JULY 2014

Origins

A luminous generative field built from concentric structure, script, helices and vortical movement.

A central source-like formation radiates outward through script-filled circles, linked systems, helical forms and corner vortices, creating a composition that operates across multiple scales.

DETAIL STUDIES

Inside the Drawings

Enlarged details reveal structures that can disappear when the drawings are viewed only as complete images. Selected close-up studies from Genesis, Matrix and Origins will be created and added here progressively.

GENESIS

Genesis Detail Studies

Selected close-ups of planetary structures, human forms, script and surrounding fields.

Films & Visual Studies

Moving image provides another way into the work — travelling between complete drawings, close detail, development and changing scale.

INTRODUCTION

The Enigmatic Drawings

An introduction to the drawings and the evolving visual world of the work.

THIRD SERIES · PROCESS

Origins — Evolution

A visual record of Origins developing through the drawing process.

CONTINUING EXPLORATION

The archive will continue to grow.

What you see here is the beginning of the visual archive, not its finished form.

New close-up studies, individual artwork films, enlarged details and other visual explorations will be created and added progressively — extending the journey beyond the complete image and deeper into the structures within each drawing.
