Butterfly Wing-Scales No. 47 is part of Chelsea Hopkins-Allan’s Butterfly Wing Scales series, inspired by the extraordinary microscopic structures that create the colour and pattern of butterfly wings.
The source for this work is the Ulysses Swallowtail (Papilio ulysses). Enlarged far beyond their natural scale, the minute overlapping structures of the butterfly wing become a dense field of repeated oval and teardrop-like marks.
The composition is dominated by an extensive palette of cobalt, ultramarine, turquoise, aqua, teal and deep blue, interwoven with white, grey, silver and occasional warmer accents. At close range, the individuality of the marks and subtle variations in colour become apparent. From further away, they merge into broader bands and currents, creating a richly layered abstract surface.
This framed limited edition has been float-mounted within a clean white box frame, giving the work a generous field of white space and allowing the irregular edge of the image to remain clearly visible.
Each print in the edition is individually checked, signed, titled and numbered by Chelsea Hopkins-Allan.
