Butterfly Wing Scales No. 37 is a vibrant abstract composition inspired by the minute overlapping scales found on butterfly and moth wings. Hundreds of repeated hand-rendered marks form an irregular woven field of colour, combining the biological structure of wing scales with the visual rhythm of crochet, textile and cellular patterning.

The composition is dominated by luminous shades of pink, coral, peach, rose, salmon and red, interwoven with accents of yellow, lime, olive, grey, charcoal, white and black.

The repeated loop-like forms create a strong sense of movement and texture across the surface. At close range, the individual marks and subtle irregularities become increasingly apparent; from further away, they merge into broader fields and currents of colour.

The interaction between the vivid warm palette and the darker scattered passages gives the work significant visual depth, allowing it to read simultaneously as an enlarged biological structure and a contemporary abstract composition.

At A1 scale, the repeated mark-making remains clearly visible while the broader colour relationships and layered structure become increasingly apparent at greater viewing distance.

The broad white mat creates a clean separation between the intensely coloured artwork and the custom black timber frame. The mat is raised approximately 5 mm above the print, introducing subtle dimensional depth within the presentation.

There are a few small spots on the white mat. These are minor, the frame itself remains in good condition, and the reduced sale price reflects the display-stock condition.

This framed open-edition product has been discontinued and no further framed examples in this format are being produced. This is one of the final remaining examples from the Enigmatic Drawings Art Display Stock collection.

This artwork forms part of the Enigmatic Drawings Art Display Stock Sale collection.

Photography note: The photographs show the actual framed display-stock artwork. Reflections through the acrylic glazing, ambient lighting, camera angle, camera white balance and image processing may affect the apparent colour, contrast and clarity. The physical print is clearer, more vibrant and more finely detailed when viewed directly.
