Edition: Unique original artwork
Medium: Oil pastel, watercolour and gouache on 300 gsm watercolour paper
Artwork size: Approximately 90 × 123 cm

A monumental original work by Chelsea Hopkins-Allan transforming a minute section of a female Orchard Swallowtail butterfly wing into an immersive study of colour, pattern and biological structure.
The source can be seen in photographs of the butterfly itself: the artwork focuses on the distinctive red, white and black-scaled region of the hindwing. Chelsea dramatically enlarges this tiny biological detail until the microscopic structure becomes an independent abstract composition.
The surface is constructed from thousands of individually worked scale-like marks. Oil pastel, watercolour and gouache combine to create repeating looped and elongated forms inspired by the overlapping scales covering a butterfly wing. From a distance, these marks merge into large fields of black, scarlet, white and gold; at close range, the individual marks, pigment variations and intricate structure become increasingly apparent.
A broad charcoal and black field surrounds the dominant red formation, while an irregular band of white and pale scales moves through the upper portion of the red. At the lower edge, the palette shifts through burnt orange, amber, ochre, yellow and cream, echoing the fine coloured markings visible on the butterfly itself.
The painted paper has been carefully cut around its irregular outer silhouette and float-mounted approximately 5 mm above a white backing board. This produces a subtle shadow beneath the artwork and gives it the appearance of a greatly enlarged biological specimen suspended within the white box frame.
The work was selected as a finalist in the 2018 Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize, recognising Chelsea Hopkins-Allan’s distinctive intersection of visual art, biological observation and environmental science.
This listing is for the unique original artwork.

Regular price: AUD $2,400
SALE PRICE: AUD $960 — approximately 60% OFF
Butterfly Wing Scales No. 36 forms part of Chelsea Hopkins-Allan’s Butterfly Wing Scales series, inspired by the minute overlapping scales that create the extraordinary colour, texture and structure of butterfly and moth wings.
Across this large-format composition, thousands of repeated elongated marks form an expansive field of shifting colour. Rather than following a rigid geometric arrangement, the marks vary subtly in spacing, direction and intensity, producing an organic surface that changes character as the viewer moves closer to or further away from the work.
This particular composition is dominated by luminous yellow-green, lime and emerald tones. These are interwoven with passages of turquoise and cobalt blue, together with coral, orange, pink, burgundy and darker neutral accents. The result is a densely layered chromatic field in which smaller areas of contrasting colour continually emerge from the broader green structure.
At close range, the individual repeated marks and subtle variations between them become apparent. From a distance, they merge into larger bands, currents and patches of colour, giving the work a strong sense of rhythm, movement and visual texture.
The Butterfly Wing Scales series draws upon the microscopic structure and colour variation found in butterfly and moth wings, translating these near-invisible natural forms into intricate abstract compositions at a dramatically enlarged scale.
This archival giclée fine-art limited edition preserves the repeated mark-making and complex colour relationships of Chelsea Hopkins-Allan’s original artwork. At 107 × 157 cm framed, it has substantial physical presence and is particularly suited to larger residential, commercial, hospitality or workplace interiors.
This framed limited-edition product has been discontinued and no further framed examples in this format are being produced. This is one of the final remaining examples from the Enigmatic Drawings Art Display Stock collection.
The reduced price reflects its Art Display Stock status. The framed work remains in good overall condition, with a few minor cosmetic marks from previous display use.
This artwork forms part of the Enigmatic Drawings Art Display Stock Sale collection.
Photography note: The photograph shows the actual artwork and frame. The frame and mat are white. The photograph was taken under warm ambient lighting and through the glazing, which has introduced a noticeable warm/yellow cast, reflections and glare, particularly across the upper portion of the work. Camera white balance and image processing can also affect the apparent balance of the greens, yellows, blues and other colours. The physical artwork, white frame and white mat are clearer and more naturally balanced when viewed directly.

Chelsea Hopkins-Allan’s original Crochet Web Mandalas are individually hand-painted circular works constructed through repeated concentric marks and intricate colour relationships.
This mini original is distinguished by a soft, restrained palette. A pale lavender and mauve outer field surrounds successive bands of periwinkle and slate blue, leading inward to a fresh mint-green centre. A darker charcoal accent close to the centre introduces a small area of tonal contrast within the otherwise delicate composition.
The gradual transition from lavender through cool blue to green creates a calm sense of inward movement, while the repeated hand-painted marks retain the rhythmic density and intricate structure characteristic of the series.

Crochet Web Mandala No. 83 forms part of Chelsea Hopkins-Allan’s Crochet Web Mandala series, constructed through repeated concentric marks and intricate colour relationships.
This work is distinguished by a predominantly cool blue-green palette. Deep cobalt and blue bands create the strongest visual structure through the middle of the composition, transitioning outward into turquoise and aqua before meeting fresher emerald and lime-green tones around the perimeter. The green centre creates a concentrated focal point within the broader blue field.
The repeated hand-worked marks radiate outward from the centre in successive concentric rings, producing a strong sense of rhythm, movement and visual depth. Changes in colour intensity across the composition create a gradual progression from the concentrated central area toward the lighter outer structure.
The Crochet Web Mandala series draws on circular geometry and patterns observed in nature. Each composition explores the interaction between repetition, colour, structure and the visual rhythm created through closely spaced marks.
This archival giclée fine-art reproduction preserves the intricate concentric construction and vibrant blue-green colour relationships of Chelsea Hopkins-Allan’s original artwork.
The broad white mat and white frame create a restrained presentation that allows the circular artwork to remain the dominant visual focus.
This framed open-edition product has been discontinued and no further framed examples in this format are being produced. This is one of the final remaining examples from the Enigmatic Drawings Art Display Stock collection.
This artwork forms part of the Enigmatic Drawings Art Display Stock Sale collection.
Photography note: The photograph shows the actual artwork and frame. The frame and mat are white. Ambient lighting, camera white balance, image processing and photographing through glazing can introduce subtle cool, blue or grey casts and can slightly affect the apparent balance of the blue, turquoise and green tones. The physical artwork is clearer and more naturally balanced when viewed directly.

Crochet Web Mandala #111 is a finely structured circular composition by Chelsea Hopkins-Allan, built from hundreds of closely repeated radial marks that expand outward from the centre in an intricate web-like pattern.
This limited-edition reproduction presents the work in a blue-to-green colour field, with the outer structure carried predominantly in blue and the centre shifting through green and teal tones. The gradual transition of colour reinforces the radial movement of the composition and gives the work a strong sense of depth despite its highly ordered geometric structure.
The circular artwork is presented as a floated element within a white custom box frame, allowing the work to sit visually apart from the surrounding white field and giving the presentation additional depth.
This is edition 5 of 100 from the signed and numbered limited edition of Crochet Web Mandala #111.
The work forms part of Chelsea Hopkins-Allan’s broader Crochet Web Mandala series, which explores repeated radial structures, fine patterning, colour and mandala-like visual organisation.
Please note: Colours may appear slightly different in photographs due to lighting, reflections and screen settings. The physical artwork should be viewed as the definitive reference.

Mini Crochet Web Mandala No. 14 is an original work by Chelsea Hopkins-Allan, built from concentric hand-painted structures in a predominantly green palette of forest green, lime, sage-grey and softer muted green tones.

The repeated marks create a strong sense of rhythm and expansion, while subtle variations in spacing, colour and line preserve the organic character of the hand-painted original.
The circular artwork has been individually cut and float-mounted approximately 5 mm above the stark-white backing, allowing a delicate shadow to form around its edge and giving the work additional visual depth within the handmade white box frame.

Butterfly Wing Scales No. 36 forms part of Chelsea Hopkins-Allan’s Butterfly Wing Scales series, inspired by the minute overlapping scales that create the extraordinary colour, texture and structure of butterfly and moth wings.
Across the composition, thousands of repeated elongated marks form a richly layered field of shifting colour.
The Butterfly Wing Scales series draws upon the microscopic structure and colour variation found in butterfly and moth wings, translating these near-invisible natural forms into intricate abstract compositions at an enlarged scale.
This limited-edition giclée print was produced using archival pigment inks on 310 gsm Hahnemühle German Etching paper. The 100% cotton archival fine-art paper has a pronounced tactile surface and substantial weight, giving the reproduction a character particularly well suited to Chelsea Hopkins-Allan’s original watercolour-based mark-making.
Each print in the total edition of 100 is individually checked, hand-signed, titled and numbered by Chelsea Hopkins-Allan in pencil on the lower front edge of the print.
The float-mounted presentation gives the work additional physical separation from the white backing and creates subtle shadow and depth within the white box frame, allowing the artwork to appear visually suspended within the frame.

Butterfly Wing Scales No. 34 is a richly coloured composition inspired by the minute overlapping scales found on butterfly and moth wings. Hundreds of repeated hand-rendered marks form an irregular woven field of colour, combining the biological structure of wing scales with the visual rhythm of crochet, textile and cellular patterning.
The upper and surrounding field is dominated by luminous shades of coral, salmon, rose pink, magenta, orange and red, interspersed with smaller passages of yellow, turquoise, green, blue and white.
Within the lower part of the composition, a large circular formation introduces deeper tones of charcoal, black, olive, forest green, navy and electric blue, surrounding a softly contrasting centre of pale peach, cream and warm pink.
The interaction between the vivid warm surrounding field and the darker circular form creates strong visual depth and gives the work the character of both an enlarged biological structure and a contemporary abstract composition.
At A1 scale, the individual repeated marks remain clearly visible while the broader colour relationships and large circular structure become increasingly apparent at greater viewing distance.
The broad white mat creates a clean visual separation between the intensely coloured artwork and the custom black timber frame. The mat is raised approximately 5 mm above the print, introducing subtle dimensional depth within the presentation.

Crochet Web Mandala No. 18 is a vibrant circular composition by Chelsea Hopkins-Allan, constructed from hundreds of repeated marks arranged in finely balanced concentric rings.
The palette moves outward from a raspberry and deep-pink centre through bands of golden yellow, pale aqua, turquoise, teal, cobalt blue, olive, sage and mint green, before expanding into broad outer rings of coral, rose, magenta and rich pink.
The small variations within each repeated mark preserve the organic, hand-rendered character of the original artwork, while the radiating circular structure creates a strong sense of rhythm, movement and meditative balance. Generous white space around the composition allows the pattern and colour relationships to remain clear and visually distinct.

Crochet Web Mandala No. 100 is a highly structured composition by Chelsea Hopkins-Allan, built from repeated hand-rendered marks arranged in expanding concentric rings.
The work is dominated by layered shades of navy, cobalt and lighter blue, with alternating dark and pale bands creating a strong sense of depth and movement across the circular form.
Thousands of repeated marks build outward from the tightly organised centre, producing a complex web-like structure that appears simultaneously radial, woven and organic. Subtle irregularities in spacing and line preserve the hand-drawn character of the original work and prevent the composition from becoming mechanically uniform.
The interaction between the darker outer rings and the lighter internal passages creates a shifting visual effect as viewing distance changes. At close range, the individual repeated marks and variations become apparent; from further away, they merge into broader concentric fields and an almost three-dimensional circular structure.
The broad white mat creates a clean visual separation around the predominantly blue composition. Raised approximately 5 mm above the print, the mat introduces subtle shadow and dimensional depth within the white custom frame.

Butterfly Wing Scales No. 33 forms part of Chelsea Hopkins-Allan’s Butterfly Wing Scales series, inspired by the minute overlapping scales that create the extraordinary colour and surface structures of butterfly and moth wings.
The composition is built from hundreds of repeated elongated marks arranged into shifting fields, clusters and currents. Rather than forming a rigid geometric pattern, the individual marks vary subtly in direction, spacing and colour, giving the work an organic, almost woven quality.
This particular work is distinguished by an exceptionally lively palette. Bright emerald and lime greens move through areas of turquoise and aqua, while coral, orange, yellow and vivid pink and magenta create concentrated passages of warmth. Darker blue-grey and neutral marks provide intermittent contrast throughout the composition.
Viewed from a distance, the individual marks merge into broader bands and patches of colour. At closer range, the repeated structure becomes increasingly apparent, revealing the fine rhythm and variation within the composition.
The Butterfly Wing Scales series draws upon the microscopic structure and colour variation found in butterfly and moth wings, translating these natural forms into intricate abstract compositions.
This archival giclée fine-art reproduction preserves the saturated colour relationships and repeated mark-making of Chelsea Hopkins-Allan’s original artwork. The raised white mat gives the print additional physical separation and depth within the white frame.
Because the composition is non-figurative, it works successfully in more than one orientation. The current framed presentation is landscape, but the work may also be displayed vertically in portrait format.

Orientation: May be displayed in portrait or landscape orientation

Butterfly Wing Scales is a large-scale original watercolour by Chelsea Hopkins-Allan inspired by the extraordinary microscopic structures that create the colour and pattern of butterfly and moth wings.
Under magnification, butterfly wings are covered by millions of minute overlapping scales. Chelsea transforms those near-invisible structures into an expansive field of thousands of individually painted oval and teardrop-like marks.
The palette is exceptionally varied. Transparent and layered passages of yellow, ochre, orange, coral, crimson, rose, mauve and lilac move through cooler areas of turquoise, aqua, cobalt blue, navy, emerald, olive and lime green. Pale washes, soft greys and areas of white provide breathing space between the stronger colours.
At close range, the individual watercolour marks and variations in pigment become increasingly visible. Viewed from further away, those marks merge into larger fields of colour, rhythm and movement. The work therefore shifts between detailed biological observation and large-scale abstraction according to viewing distance.
The painted paper has been carefully cut around its outer edge and float-mounted approximately 5 mm above a white backing board. The separation creates a delicate shadow underneath the artwork and gives it a specimen-like quality, as though an enormously magnified section of biological material has been suspended within the frame.
Because the composition is non-figurative, it can be displayed successfully in either portrait or landscape orientation.
This listing is for the unique original artwork.
This original is currently displayed at Netanya Noosa and is being released as part of the current Display Stock Sale.
